Wax suits paper labels for general indoor use and is the least expensive. Wax resin gives a sharper and more durable mark on coated paper and some synthetics. Resin is for synthetic labels that have to resist heat, chemicals and abrasion, and it is the only grade that survives harsh conditions.
Match the ribbon to the label material first, then to what the label must survive. A resin ribbon on uncoated paper wastes money, and a wax ribbon on polyester will smudge off. Using the wrong grade is the most common cause of print that rubs away.
They describe which way the coated side of the ribbon faces on the roll. A printer is built for one or the other, and fitting the wrong wind puts the ink against the printhead instead of the label, so nothing prints.
A ribbon is consumed in proportion to the label length printed, not the number of labels, so ribbon length divided by label length gives the count. Matching ribbon length to the media roll means both run out together and the printer is opened once.
